Deputy Minister of Environment and PGN Saka Support Environmental Conservation through 120,000 Mangrove Planting Program

PT Saka Energi Indonesia (PGN Saka), a subsidiary of PGN Subholding Gas Pertamina engaged in the upstream oil and gas industry, has demonstrated its commitment to environmental preservation by initiating a mangrove conservation program along the Ujungpangkah coast through Saka Indonesia Pangkah Limited.

This commitment was manifested through the planting of 120,000 mangrove seedlings at the Green Open Space in Pangkahwetan Village, Ujungpangkah District, Gresik Regency on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The event was attended by PGN Saka’s Board of Directors, including President Director Intan Fauzi, Director of Operations Achmad Agus Miftakhurrohman, Director of Finance and Business Support M. Atras Mafazi, Commissioner Harun Sulkam, and representatives from PGN Sales & Operation Region 3. PGN Saka also strengthened its conservation spirit by inviting the Indonesian Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono and his delegation, House of Representatives Member Tom Liwafa, SKK Migas Jabanusa Representative Kus Habib Amrullah, East Java Provincial Government Assistant II Ir. Joko Irianto, East Java Environmental Agency Head Nurkholis, Acting Regent of Gresik Asluchul Alif, and representatives from various institutions and local communities.

In her remarks, PGN Saka President Director reiterated the company’s support for Program Pengembangan Masyarakat (Community Development Programs) or CSR, particularly in the field of environmental protection, through ongoing coordination with both local and central governments. “As a Production Sharing Contract Contractor, we fully support the Tree Planting Program initiated by SKK Migas through sustainable mangrove cultivation programs, aimed at environmental conservation and the restoration of critical lands,” said Intan Fauzi.

SKK Migas Jabanusa Representative Kus Habib Amrullah noted that PGN Saka serves as one of the exemplary KKKS in greening activities. “SKK Migas continues to encourage and monitor community development programs conducted by KKKS, including PGN Saka, which has pioneered flagship initiatives in mangrove conservation,” he stated.

PGN Saka’s mangrove conservation program is not only implemented in Pangkahwetan Village but also extends to Banyuurip and Pangkahkulon Villages. The program, initiated along with training for fishermen in seedling and planting activities in various mangrove ecotourism areas, has enabled these villages to produce hundreds of thousands of mangrove seedlings ready for planting.

East Java Provincial Government Assistant II Ir. Joko Irianto expressed his appreciation for PGN Saka’s initiative, which aligns with the Nawa Bhakti Satya mission. “On behalf of the East Java Provincial Government, we support this initiative. As our Governor says, planting mangroves is a form of donating oxygen,” he remarked.

Acting Regent of Gresik, Dr. Asluchul Alif, also conveyed his gratitude for PGN Saka’s contributions to environmental programs in the region. “This greening effort greatly helps reduce pollution in Gresik. We strongly support it,” he said. The Gresik Regency Government also presented an appreciation certificate to PGN Saka for its commitment to mangrove conservation.

The event culminated with a speech by Indonesian Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono, who expressed his pleasure at being present. “I came specifically to witness this good initiative. On behalf of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, we thank PGN Saka for its environmental conservation efforts. Mangroves play a vital role in life. Let’s preserve them together,” he stated.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic handover of mangrove seedlings from PGN Saka to the village heads of Pangkahwetan and Banyuurip, the Gresik HNSI (fishermen’s association), and Pokmaswas Pangkahwetan (mangrove conservation community group). This was followed by a joint mangrove planting activity involving all guests and the local community.

“The mangrove planting program must also address the issue of plastic (non-organic) waste that often comes along. Preventive measures are needed to tackle this,” added the Deputy Minister of Environment.

The mangrove planting program is part of PGN Saka’s implementation of the AKHLAK core values and reflects a tangible contribution to the national decarbonization initiative and efforts to meet the requirements of the PROPER (Environmental Performance Rating Program) beyond compliance standards. This activity also forms part of the PGN Saka HSSE Appreciation Day series of events.

Through this initiative, PGN Saka ensures that every operational activity the company takes also delivers sustainable benefits to surrounding communities. PGN Saka remains committed to making a positive impact in its operational areas through various sustainable social and environmental programs.
