PGN Saka as an affiliate of PGN Subholding Gas Pertamina, is an upstream oil and gas company contributing to Indonesia’s energy independence. Indonesia, with its large population and rapid economic growth, has escalating energy needs. PGN Saka plays a crucial role in meeting these needs.
Using eco-friendly technology is now a necessity for upstream oil and gas companies. It’s a key factor in navigating a business increasingly conscious of climate change impacts. PGN Saka has proactively taken steps to ensure environmentally friendly and sustainable exploitation of discovered oil and gas.
Environmental Friendly Innovation of PGN Saka
Reducing emissions is the primary focus now, utilizing safe, eco-friendly, and sustainable technologies for future generations. This aligns with PGN Saka’s commitment in supporting a 30% emission reduction target by 2030 set by PT Pertamina (Persero). Concrete steps are taken towards a sustainable future.
Supporting PGN’s decarbonization program, PGN Saka has initiated decarbonization efforts covering energy efficiency policies, renewable energy, carbon capture, and carbon offset. An important step in this emission reduction program is installing offshore solar panels at Sidayu (Pangkah Block) to provide independent energy for electrical equipment in the project. Solar panels are installed on Well Head Platform C (WHP-C) and WHP-D with a total capacity of 18.36 kilowatt peak (kWp).
PGN Saka actively participates in decarbonization efforts through various programs, opting for environmentally friendly, efficient, and sustainable technologies for asset operations. One of these is carbon offset, weighing carbon in natural gas production processes that generate carbon dioxide (CO²). This effort includes mangrove planting around our operational areas, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 16,417 tons of CO² equivalent annually.
Furthermore, PGN Saka utilizes exhaust gasses from Gas Turbine Generators (GTG). These gasses are recovered using absorption chillers, reducing emissions by 1,687 tons of CO² equivalent annually and potentially saving 34.047 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of energy. PGN Saka also substitutes gas engines in flash gas compressors with electric-driven ones, reducing emissions by 4,143 tons of CO² equivalent annually with a potential saving of 41.3 MMSCF (future plan).
Addressing Climate Change Through Emission Mitigation
As an upstream oil and gas company involved in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia, PGN Saka focuses on using renewable energy sources like solar power and more eco-friendly operational technologies. Applied technologies enable energy generation without producing toxic gasses contributing to global climate change.
PGN Saka’s involvement in emission reduction is significant enough to address the increasingly felt impacts of climate change. At the national level, these measures aid Indonesia in fulfilling its commitments in international agreements like the Paris Agreement to reduce carbon emissions. Significant steps are taken to maintain national energy resilience and preserve the environment for future generations by harnessing the potential of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and implementing decarbonization programs for emission reduction.
